In response to the harsh economic impact that COVID-19 has had on residents, the El Monte Rental Assistance Program will offer one-time rental assistance up to $1,200.00 to help renters in the City of El Monte.

FAQ - Rental Assistance Program

Do I qualify for the Rental Assistance Program?
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible to apply:
  • Applicant must reside within El Monte city limits
  • Applicant must be a renter and unit must be the applicant’s primary place of residence. Payments toward mortgages are ineligible
  • Government issued ID (drivers license, passport, or resident alien card, etc.)
  • Applicant must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Applicant must demonstrate need for assistance due to being financially impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Applicant household must meet HUD Very-Low-Income Limits of 50% of the area median income
  • Submit all required documents
  • If selected for a grant, the Applicant must confirm that the landlord is willing to complete and submit required documents
If I qualify, what documents will be required?
Documents listed below must be submitted if the Applicant is selected to participate::
  • Rental agreement or lease
  • Documentation demonstrating need due to being financially impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, including proof of loss of income, past due notice invoice from landlord
  • Copies of paycheck stubs for the last two (2) months for all members of the household.
  • Copies of all other sources of income for all household members for the past two (2) months, including but not limited to Social Security/SSI benefits, Unemployment checks/statements, retirement/pensions, and public assistance.
  • Copies of all bank statements for all household members for the past two (2) months, including checking accounts, savings account, etc.
  • Government issued ID (drivers license, passport, or resident alien card, etc.)
  • Proof of legal U.S. status for applicant
How much can I recieve in Rental Assistance?
In response to the harsh economic impact that COVID-19 has had on residents, the El Monte Rental Assistance Program will offer one-time rental assistance up to $1,200.00 to help renters in the City of El Monte. Financial assistance will be offered to low income households who rent in the City and have experienced loss of income due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The grant program is made possible with federal Community Development Block Grant CARES Act (CDBG-CV) funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), therefore residents must meet all requirements to be eligible for the program.

The rental assistance program will conduct a lottery to select applicants to verify eligibility. The deadline to submit the rental assistance application for the lottery is Wednesday, May 20th at 5 pm.

Where to submit application? Hard copy of the application form is available outside of City Hall East. A drop box is located outside of City Hall East for submission of hard copy application.
